The Montafon Stone Sheep

 

History:

An indigenous breed from the Montafon Valley (Vorarlberg) and a representative of the old Stone sheep  type with some Bergamask sheep influence.

Special characteristics:

Undemanding, hary and rugged, adaptable and sure-footed, a good feed converter with few demands on feed quality. Good fertility and mothering characteristics. Because it is an old type breed, fattening is slow.

       Phenotype description:

Small-framed, rangy sheep with clean  legs and a long woolly tail. The short, pointed ears stand out from the head. Both sexes horned or polled, with coarse, hairy wool in different colours. Non seasonal breeders.
