The Alpine Stone Sheep

 

History:

Like almost all stone sheep, the breed is descended from the Zaupel sheep and the neolithic Peat sheep. While previously widely distributed in the Eastern alpine region, since around 1960 it has been almost entirely displaced by White Mountain, Merino and Texel sheep.

Special characteristics:

Undemanding, well suited for grazing on ecologically valuable dry and alpine pastures. Suitable for direct marketing of meat, wool and skins.

       Phenotype description:

Rangy, small mountain sheep with a straight head and a slightly curved nose. All colours, face, lower jaw and legs are free of wool. Forehead normally covered with short wool. Polled or horned.

Breeding season: all year.
