The Brown Mountain Sheep

History:

Like the White Mountain sheep, Brown Mountain sheep originated from local Stone sheep and northern Italian Bergamasker sheep. Prized in earlier times for their naturally coloured wool and skins, the breed has been in decline since 1930.

Special characteristics:

Vigorous, good grazers, disease resistant, well adapted to alpine regions and marginal land, well suited for direct marketing of naturally coloured wool and sheepskins.

 Phenotype description:

Medium-framed, of a uniform brown colour, with the head, ears and legs covered by darker hair. Polled, with a woolly forehead and long, wide lop-ears.
